Grand Canal Residence

This project consists of a complete renovation and major expansion of an existing residence, increasing the built area from 1,200 square feet to approximately 4,400 square feet.

About the Project

Grand Canal Residence is a Miami home addition that reinterprets an existing residence through a substantial residential expansion. The project was developed to improve not only the size of the home, but also the quality of its interior spaces, creating a brighter, more open, and better-balanced residential environment. The design focuses on open-concept living areas, visual continuity, and fluid transitions between spaces, while private areas are strategically arranged to provide greater privacy. Natural light, interior spaciousness, and verticality guide the architectural concept, creating a home where openness, privacy, and luminosity coexist in balance.

Structural Challenges

Transforming an existing residence into a significantly larger structure required careful structural analysis to integrate the expansion without compromising the stability of the original system. The primary challenge involved connecting the new structural framework with the existing one, reinforcing load-bearing elements, and redistributing loads to support the increase in volume, height, and built area while maintaining structural continuity and construction efficiency.

Structural Compatibility

This indicator evaluates the project's ability to efficiently integrate the existing structural system with the new construction elements introduced through the expansion. Structural compatibility is achieved through a detailed analysis of the original load-bearing systems, an assessment of their load capacity, and the implementation of strategic reinforcements that allow the new structural framework to operate cohesively with the existing one. The objective is to ensure that both systems function as a unified structure, preventing structural stress, differential settlement, or inconsistent structural behavior between the original and newly built elements, thereby ensuring long-term safety, durability, and construction coherence.

Structural Continuity and Stability

This indicator measures the ability of the structural design to maintain efficient load transfer and overall stability in an intervention that combines an existing structure with a significant expansion. Structural continuity is achieved through the proper alignment of load-bearing elements, balanced distribution of vertical and lateral loads, and the incorporation of reinforcement systems that ensure consistent structural performance across the entire building. This approach allows the expanded residence to maintain stable structural behavior under permanent loads, live loads, and environmental conditions, ensuring long-term safety, structural integrity, and reliability.
