About the Project

The House 13800 SW project is a comprehensive residential transformation focused on expanding the existing home’s functionality, outdoor living experience, and architectural presence. The project reorganizes the property through a clear sequence of arrival, transition, and recreation, creating a stronger connection between the residence, its entrance, and the rear outdoor areas. At the front of the property, a 30-foot porte cochère defines the main entrance and improves vehicular access while creating a strong architectural statement. At the rear, a 25-foot-deep covered terrace acts as an intermediate living space between the interior of the home and the landscape, extending the daily use of the residence beyond its interior footprint. The outdoor program is organized around a 20 × 40-foot swimming pool, open gazebo, and guest house, creating a complete recreational area for family use, entertaining, and outdoor living. Together, these elements transform the backyard into the central social space of the project. Through coordinated residential design, permitting, structural planning, and construction execution, the project integrates multiple exterior components into one cohesive design, creating a functional, buildable, and visually consistent expansion that works with the existing residence while improving the overall living experience.

Structural Challenges and Design Solutions

One of the main structural challenges of the project was designing a deep rear terrace without blocking natural light from entering the existing interior spaces. To achieve this, the terrace was developed with tall structural posts and pitched gable roofs capable of covering wide areas while maintaining a visually light architectural expression. The integration of multiple exterior components — including the porte cochère, rear terrace, pool area, gazebo, and guest house — required careful coordination of structural systems, foundations, and connections. Each new element was designed to work with the existing residence while supporting the overall architectural and outdoor living concept.

Structural Compatibility

Structural compatibility was achieved by carefully integrating the new structures with the existing building. The design respected the original load paths, alignments, and construction systems, allowing the porte cochère, covered terrace, and recreational areas to function as natural extensions of the residence without creating unnecessary structural stress.

Structural continuity and stability are supported through a coherent system of vertical supports, pitched roof structures, engineered foundations, and well-defined structural connections.
